Indrayani River Improvement Project
The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), Pune, has undertaken the Indrayani River Improvement Project to prevent pollution and rejuvenate the Indrayani River.
The Indrayani River travels a total length of 105.3 km and meets the Bhima River at Tulapur. Along this route, it passes through 3 Nagar Parishads (Municipal Councils) – Lonavala, Talegaon Dabhade and Alandi, 2 Nagar Panchayats – Vadgaon and Dehu, the Dehu Road Cantonment Board and the Gram Panchayats (Village Councils) of Indori, Kamshet-Khadkale and Kusgaon Budruk, all with a population of more than 15,000. It also flows through the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation area and 39 other villages. The Indrayani River is the main source for the water supply scheme of Alandi Municipality.
The Indrayani River has become polluted due to the discharge of domestic and industrial wastewater and sewage. Therefore, out of the total river length of 105.3 km, it is proposed to carry out pollution control work for 87.50 km in the PMRDA area, excluding the 18.00 km stretch within the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation area. Under this project, a total of 38 Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) are planned to be constructed (20 in urban areas and 18 in rural areas) to treat wastewater from a total of 48 villages and cities on both banks of the Indrayani River within the PMRDA limits, thereby controlling river pollution.
The Detailed Project Report for pollution control under the Indrayani River Improvement Project has been submitted to the National River Conservation Directorate (NRCD), under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India, for approval. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been evaluated by IIT-Roorkee on behalf of NRCD and they have suggested including 15 years of daily maintenance. Accordingly, the project cost is ₹671 crore. This Detailed Project Report has been submitted to the National River Conservation Directorate for final approval in August 2024.
The National River Conservation Directorate under the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti and the State Government will provide funds for pollution control works in the ratio of 60:40 of the capital cost. Approval from NRCD is in the final stage. Administrative approval has been granted by the Authority Meeting Resolution No. 11/10 dated 24/09/2024 for ₹793 crore for the above scheme.
The process of appointing a consultant for post-tender activity for this project is in progress.
