Pavana River Improvement Project in Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority Area
The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), Pune, has undertaken the Pavana River Improvement Project to prevent pollution and rejuvenate the Pavana River.
The Pavana River has a total length of 60 km. Out of this, 54 villages are located in 35 km and 24 villages are located near the dam area.
A survey of the villages in the upstream and downstream areas of the Pavana Dam in the PMRDA area has been conducted and the drains in the villages have been studied. During this process, a total of 15 drains polluting the river have been identified.
After studying all aspects of the upstream and downstream areas of the Pavana Dam in the PMRDA area, the Pavana River Pollution Project Report proposes to control river pollution by intercepting and treating the water flowing from the drains. In addition, the project includes modernization of crematoriums located near the riverbanks and a comprehensive survey of village solid waste management.
A detailed project report of ₹218 crore has been prepared to control pollution from various sources in the Pavana River area. This project will be submitted by the Maharashtra State Environment Department to the National River Conservation Directorate (NRCD) under the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti for approval. For this, the central and state governments will provide funds for pollution control works in the ratio of 60:40 of the capital cost. Administrative approval has been granted by the Authority Meeting Resolution No. 11/10 dated 24/09/2024 for ₹197 crore for the above scheme.
The process of appointing a consultant for post-tender activity for this project is in progress
